Maren Herman

I have sculpted in clay for 19 years because I love the responsive and forgiving nature of the medium. Via clay, the symbol of the human body, I attempt to animate the human figure. The figures that grow from the clay are gestures of coping or celebrating life.

I am a Michigan artist. All of my works are original art, which I create by the direct sculpture method. I am taken by the malleability of the medium, the oldest natural medium for sculpture. To me, it has primitive allure as raw material from the earth. It is this elemental rawness that gives a sense of connection to the earth.
