Michael Callihan

I was born in Grand Rapids and raised in Freeport, Michigan where most of my
youth was spent hiking through the fields or fishing along Coldwater Creek. After
graduating high school, I worked as a welder and then as an industrial, commercial,
and residential painter, but my creative side kept emerging: lunch breaks were spent
welding scrap metal into abstract sculpture, began spray painting cars and motor-
cycles, and also decorative paint application for home interiors. At 30 years of age
I had decided that my future was in visual art. I now have a BFA from Kendall School
of Art, Grand Rapids, MI(1984) and a MFA from Parsons School of Design, New York,
NY (1988).
